Winter in Wisconsin brings plenty of beauty — and plenty of challenges for keeping wood floors in great shape. As temperatures drop, we’re curious how do you keep your floors clean and protected during the winter months?
At A&B Wood Floors, one of the biggest winter concerns we can think of is humidity control. Just as it is important to your health to have your home's moisture level in an ideal range, that range also impacts your floors. With an older furnace running throughout the season, it's easy for the air to get dry. It's essential to keep indoor humidity between 35–50% to protect your wood floors. Levels that fall too low can lead to split boards, gaps, and other problems with your floor; while also contributing to health issues like dry sinuses. Simple tools like a hygrometer and humidifiers can make a big difference in maintaining a healthy balance.
Another winter must‑do is proper floor cleaning. Winter and cold temperatures mean new contaminates are introduced to your floors, mainly water from snow and salt. We recommend Basic Squeaky Wood & Laminate Floor Cleaner to safely remove salt, grime, and winter residue without damaging your finish. It’s a gentle, effective cleaner that helps keep your floors looking their best. And it's one that works well all year long, so you don't have to worry about getting a different cleaner or forgetting to switch as the seasons change.
With a couple simple adjustments you can ensure your gorgeous wood floors will continue to greet family and friends at full shine. Lets make sure your floors are putting their best foot foward for the holidays, and continue to be beautiful all the way through the winter.
We’d love to hear what works for you. Are there specific issues you run into with your floor this time of year? Feel free to share your tips, challenges, or questions.
As always, we’re here to help with any wood flooring questions you may have.
